What should we learn from recent news reporter scandals?

It looks like we're starting out 2015 on a great note, with regard to a couple of the latest scandals surrounding some news reporters lying about some of their experiences or reporting things that simply were untrue. And, in these individuals' professions, they're 'on-the-record', so to speak. Why did they lie? Hard to know.

We might never know the ultimate reasons behind why the individuals chose to 'embellish' things (why does anyone do that...and most of us DO do that at times, right?), but I think we might be able to find a 'silver lining' in it all...if we can use the lessons-learned to demand better. Not only from news reporters, but from all the other sources of "untruths" we are bombarded with every day.
