Of course, the "plan" consists of more than just getting a better handle on background checks and making ALL gun sellers get licenses. It also includes measures for additional law-enforcement, and takes into account much more about individuals who might suffer certain mental illnesses.
I do think there are some people that might present more risk than others, with regard to owning and using guns for their 'appropriate' purposes, so I am in favor of better screening and background checks.
I also believe all gun merchants should be licensed, otherwise we lack the visibility, accountability, and "reasonable controls" necessary for a workable, effective system for helping to curb some of the senseless tragedies we have become 'numbed' to over recent years.
The President promised that his plan was not an attempt at disarming Americans. We don't know all the details of it, so I guess we'll have to take his word, for now.
Time alone will tell if this plan can make a difference. Meanwhile, we'll have to pay close attention to just how it plays out in the political arena, too, since it is certainly a 'hot-button-item' and sure to draw plenty of attention, y'know?
